solo exhibit of Maryline Lemaitre's works

Known for her luminous works that are sometimes nostalgic and sometimes playful, painter Maryline Lemaitre will unveil a brand new series of paintings this spring as part of a solo exhibition at the Espace 40 (Mile End) Gallery. For Lemaitre, the "Minimal" exhibition represents a return to her roots, as an artist: Composed of refined and impactful paintings, the series reflects an exploration of textures and compositions, where orange, white and black are emphasized.

Maryline Lemaitre was born in France and lived in Asia for nine years before moving to Canada in 2001. In her paintings she accumulates layers of materials, then glues, scratches, removes, returns, delivers, controls and flattens, chants a memorandum to the pallet or stencil. These elements are re-visited in large brush strokes or with old credit cards until she achieves the pictorial density that is her signature. It is an intuitive process inspired by a picture, a pattern, some words or a special piece of old original writing which could be the key to define a theme, and begin a series. Topics vary over time because they are inspired by her everyday life, by her memory, or are the expression of her unconscious.
